Economic perspectives - H. Vogel (2001) First I want to start off by saying that I found it rather difficult to ascertain the importance of this text in comparison with the overall course especially because I never took economy in high school and many of the terms used in the text are completely foreign to me. However, I did try to formulate some sort of critique on Vogel's article.
Q Doesn't Vogel overlook a very important aspect which determines the way in which people balance work and leisure time?
A I am of the opinion that the social attitudes that a society has at a certain time in history is a very important element that determines the way people look at leisure time. During the Eighties there was a rather dominant trend towards capitalism and commercialism. Nowadays we might be moving towards a society in which spirituality and health are more important than monetary motives. Happiness is measured less by income and more by the choices we make in life. Perhaps certain technologies such as the Internet can help us with the way in which we structure our life around leisure because they can provide us with more free time. On a lighter note...
